A Sleeping Beauty

Authored by Neal McElhaney
Initially, I considered opening this narrative with “Once Upon a Time,” but ultimately chose a different approach. This is a love story, one that has lingered in my thoughts for years. While the tale flows effortlessly in my mind, translating it to paper has proven challenging. My thoughts often wander, resulting in ideas that feel disjointed, incomplete, or out of sequence.

With this work, I aim to capture the essence of both my heart and mind, crafting a fictional narrative grounded in the truth of love in its purest form. My hope is to convey the depth and authenticity of this enduring story with clarity and resonance.

A Painting of Words

Authored by Neal McElhaney
The words inscribed on these pages primarily reflect the profound love I hold for one extraordinary woman—a woman whose heart and hand I was honored to win in marriage. Yet, these pages also bear the weight of my sorrow, as her life was cut tragically short. Interwoven with these reflections are writings that express my deep faith in God, who provided solace during our darkest moments.

Though family and friends suggest I have not fully grieved, I respectfully disagree. The smile I offer those around me is a gesture of resilience, but my writings reveal the depth of my pain alongside the enduring love I carry for her. She continues to inspire the best in me, her memory a guiding light. These words, inked with the essence of my heart, are both my tribute to her and the tears of my loss.

Additionally, these pages convey my affection for others—friends and family—who have enriched my life, their presence a cherished part of my journey.

Nine One One: The operators answered

Authored by Neal McElhaney
Neal’s writings on the events of September 11, 2001, vividly capture his profound anger and deep sorrow. Like many, he was overwhelmed by shock, struggling to accept the reality unfolding before him. As he watched the tragedy on the television screen, his initial reaction was disbelief, his mind grappling with the notion that it must be a hoax. Tragically, it was not. The senselessness of the act defied comprehension. With pen and paper in hand, Neal channeled his emotions—venting his frustration, shedding tears, and turning to prayer. Some of his poems were composed in the moment, as events unfolded, while others emerged during pauses when he stepped away from the television, seeking to process the overwhelming scenes. Even now, his words continue to reflect the enduring grief and emotional weight of that day.

From Pen In Hand, To A Wedding Band

Authored by Neal McElhaney
In a vivid dream, Neal appeared to his daughter, Amy, entrusting her with the task of publishing one final book. He conveyed precise instructions regarding the book’s title and content, leaving Amy to ponder whether this would mark the culmination of his legacy. This was not the first time Neal had visited her in dreams, but this encounter carried a distinct weight—a bittersweet blend of closure and purpose.

Two years had passed since Amy last delved into her father’s writings, a process that had once been steeped in grief. Now, her healing journey was underway. Though the pain of loss lingered, her tears were fewer, and her resolve stronger.

This book, the fifteenth and potentially final volume, includes some poems previously published in other works, a choice Neal explicitly endorsed. He envisioned this collection as a definitive compilation, tracing the arc of his life with Sandy—from their early days during his Army service to the moments that defined their courtship.

50/50

Authored by Neal McElhaney
The inspiration for this book emerged from a deeply personal experience involving Neal and his daughter, Amy. While driving Amy to a hospital for a hand surgery, their vehicle was struck in a collision just five minutes from their destination. The accident was jarring, leaving both Neal and Amy grappling with guilt. For Neal, it marked his first accident in over three decades, prompting self-reproach. Amy, meanwhile, felt responsible, as the trip was necessitated by her medical needs.

During a reflective walk, Amy addressed the shared burden of their guilt. “Dad,” she said, “we’re both blaming ourselves for the accident, and it’s too much to carry alone. Can we share the responsibility—50/50?” With a relieved sigh, Neal agreed, “I can handle that.” This moment of mutual understanding allowed them to release their individual burdens, recognizing that the accident was not the fault of either one alone. This experience of shared healing became the catalyst for the creation of this book.
